What are essential oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated liquid compounds that are extracted from plants - either through distillation or cold pressing. Many claim that different oils carry with them various physical and mental health benefits. Here at Bouclé, we’re more than aware we are far from being scientists or doctors so will never claim a certain oil will guarantee a cured disease or everlasting happiness! We use them in our products simply because we believe that having 100% natural ingredients is better for you than inhaling synthetic, chemically filled fragrance.

All of our products are correctly labelled, listing any potential allergens following EU guidance declaring the 26 most known allergenic substances. We hope any potential questions are answered in our information provided below, however if you have any questions relating to safety and our Bouclé products, please feel free to drop us an email at boucle.gifts@gmail.com and we’ll do our best to answer any query.

SDS sheets provided upon request.

Classification, labelling & packaging

What is CLP legislation?

It is the Classification, Labelling & Packaging Regulation, commencing in 2008 by the European Parliament & Council.

To be CLP compliant, you must adhere to providing the correct labelling of your products including: pictograms, signal words and standard statements for hazard, prevention, response, storage and disposal, for every hazard class and category. The legislation also sets general packaging standards to ensure the safe supply of hazardous substances and mixtures.

It is an EU law that applies to ‘mixtures’ that are not cosmetics made or sold within the EU, and since 2015 now includes products such as Scented Candles, Wax Melts and Reed Diffusers. Its objective is to harmonise the labelling of products across the EU.

We use carefully sourced 100% natural ingredients and have worked very hard to be transparent and provide all the necessary, easy to find information, regarding each Bouclé product.

The CLP process is lengthy and expensive, but our customers’ safety is of paramount importance to us.

When to avoid using essential oil products

Please see below our advice on essential oil usage in relation to pets and pregnancy. Essential oils may cause allergic reaction – check each product allergens list.

Do not use on your skin and do not take internally or ingest any Bouclé essential oil products. If swallowed, seek immediate medical advice.

Personal safety

Skin Safety: All of our home fragrance products are designed for the purpose of scenting your home and are not for use as a cosmetic. Should any ingredients come into contact with your skin, wash with warm soapy water. If any irritation or inflammation occurs, seek medical advice. If any of our products come into contact with broken skin and a reaction occurs or persistent irritation or inflammation occurs, seek medical advice.

Eye safety: Avoid using any of our products near eyes as some essential oils can cause eye irritation, which could cause lasting damage if not washed. In the event any essential oil product comes into contact with eyes, immediately rinse with cold water for several minutes and seek medical advice if any irritation or inflammation occurs.

Disposal

Our products are designed to fully evaporate during use. However, should the need arise to dispose of any essential oil products, they should be disposed of safely and responsibly. Check the product label and contact your local authority for information on how to safely dispose of essential oils.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

The use of essential oils during pregnancy and breastfeeding has been an ongoing debate. Traditionally medical professionals have advised against the use of all essential oils during pregnancy, but more recently it has been advised that they are safe to use externally. All of our candles and diffusers are diluted with natural base oils and waxes minimising any risk. Our oil droppers are 100% essential oil and must be diluted when using.

Health line has some helpful advice on essential oils and pregnancy but we recommend speaking to your Health Practitioner to get the most up to date relevant advice to help you make your choice. The health of you and your baby must come first.

Take a look at this health line article on pregnancy & essential oils.

Pet Safety

Although essential oils aren’t synthetic chemicals, they are highly concentrated. Our candles and diffusers are safe to use around pets in most circumstances but must be kept well out of their reach. We do not recommend using steam diffusers or essential oil burners in the same room as pets. Here at Bouclé we love pets and want you to take every precaution when using any essential oil product around them. If any liquid containing essential oils comes in direct contact with your pets skin or tongue, rinse with cold water and seek veterinary advice as a precaution.

Keep all Bouclé products out of the reach of pets.

Do not let a pet smell or lick an essential oil containing product.

Avoid using an essential oil product in the same room as the pet sleeps.

If you believe an essential oil product could be affecting your pet, stop using it immediately and seek advice from your vet.

As long as you do not use undiluted essential oil products around your pets [for example our oil droppers] and follow the advice above, you can minimise any risks.

There are some specific essential oils that you should keep well away from cats and different ones to keep away from dogs.

Take a look at the following links for advice on the use of essential oils around Cats and Dogs.
