How to Choose a Reed Diffuser: Everything You Need to Know

Reed diffusers are one of the most effortless ways to fragrance your home. With no flame, there's no fuss, just a continuous gentle scent that fills your space. But with so many options out there, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Here's everything you need to know.

What is a reed diffuser and how does it work?

A reed diffuser consists of a vessel filled with scented liquid and a bundle of porous reeds. The reeds absorb the liquid and release the fragrance slowly into the air through evaporation. The result is a subtle, constant scent - perfect for rooms where you want background fragrance without having to think about it.

Natural vs synthetic fragrance oils and why it matters

Most reed diffusers on the market use synthetic fragrance oils, which can contain hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. At Bouclé, all our diffusers are scented with 100% pure essential oils - the same oils used in aromatherapy. This means the scent is gentler, more complex, and genuinely therapeutic rather than just decorative. The reeds used by us are also natural rattan reeds rather than synthetic fibre pulp bonded together with synthetic bonding agents.

How to choose the right scent Think about the mood you want to create in the room:

How many reeds should you use? More reeds = stronger scent throw. Start with 4–6 reeds for a subtle background fragrance, or use the full bundle for a more noticeable scent. In smaller rooms like bathrooms, fewer reeds work better. Flip the reeds every week or two to refresh the scent.

Which rooms work best? Reed diffusers work particularly well in hallways, living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms - anywhere with a gentle flow of air to help disperse the fragrance. Avoid placing them directly in front of a radiator or in very draughty spots, as this will use the liquid much quicker.

How long does a reed diffuser last? A good quality 100ml diffuser typically lasts 4–8 weeks depending on the number of reeds used, room temperature and air circulation. Our Bouclé diffusers come with refill options so you can top up the vessel rather than replacing it entirely.

What to look for when buying

  • 100% pure essential oils (not fragrance oils)
  • A well-made vessel that won't tip easily
  • Natural rattan reeds (synthetic reeds don't absorb as well)
  • A brand that offers refills - better for your pocket and the planet
